There should be a discussion on forum etiquette.
Not all of us are IT :)
If not a discussion then perhaps a link to somewhere else where they sorted it out and left the post up.
I'm curious about protocol.

By reading the forum for a few days you quickly get the idea of how to conduct yourself here. This place is like any real place. It has a culture that develops and evolves over time and the rules are largely self-evident. I do not think we need it spelled out.

I agree. As a matter of fact, I'm terribly proud of the manner in which the participants here conduct themselves. I've been a participant in forums, boards, bbs's, etc. for over 25 years ... and I know it isn't always true! :-)
